Rackham 'Centurus Clone' W.I.P

While I've been doing the final bits n pieces on Sumothay, started next project namely Centurus clone.
Having watched few Manga films recently decided to do him in similar Manga/Cartoon style.
Want bright kind of retro style in the end..

To start off used Zenithal spray base but done with grey and white to keep the base colours bright.
The armour is painted without solid basecoat.
Started with glaze of   G.W Ice blue
           Followed by    G.W Rotten flesh
                      Then    G.W Hawk turquoise
                       And    G.W Shadow grey
                    Finally    G.W Midnight blue
All colours worked from light area to dark concentrating the darker colours below the waist and lower back.
The glazes are built up to solid colour over 3 passes (Picture shows 2nd pass).
Next few stages are to black line and extra overall washes to tie it all together.

Sumothay by Enigma. W.I.P

Having completed my warm up miniature I wasted no time in jumping on to next project. Namely Sumothay, This miniature was chosen to provide me with new challenge of much larger scale piece,With a lot of subtle details.Has been real pleasure to paint this guy the sculpt is excellent, with just the right blend of fantasy and real going on.Got proper mixed vibe from this one kind of Japanese,Elven,Nomad but a definitely Caucasian male..So with these few prompts I set about painting.

Started with my standard spray base coat.

Poor quality picture :( sorry about that, but you can  still see.

Next step was to block in the first base colours and quick shade&highlight. (above) Decided on green as main armour colour with neutral colours for cloth, fur etc

Then I began to glaze the entire mini starting off with warm yellow on head and shoulders blending to sepia, from chest to mid thigh blending to Devlin mud, down to toes. Applied these glazes over several thin layers possibly about 3 or 4.more on lower darker areas.
From the last picture can see that half the face is much lighter and friendly ish... where as other is cold n grim.
This happened without planning, but had wave of inspiration that had to follow. Idea became that he is man pushed to the edge seeking revenge.Yet still of two minds as to how far he must go.
' To defeat a demon one must become a demon '

More progress, Re highlighted over the glaze layers to bring out individual areas. Placed the lighting just over his right shoulder to put the front left of him in shadow like the face.(Becomes more apparent later)

Painted him up to about three quarters done,While constructing base. Then glue him in place ready to do all the final lights and tweaks. Not many pictures of base work in progress, did find one though, along with the chaos of paints etc on my desk..

I am currently still messing around with pulling all the final bits together (Hedgehog inc).
Will post finished pictures once done with list of additions.

Any feedback & thoughts before finish would be great help.

Wolfrik the Warrior.

Warm up with Wolfrik the Warrior....
After break from the brushes needed something to get going again and find that flow.
Inspired by alternate version of Wolfrik seen at GamesDay few years ago, Decided to
give him Helmet and second weapon so he was suited up for war & Carnage . .

Thoughts while painting him ;
  Minimal pallet more fantasy real..
Added blues to all basecoats to give cold and harmonious feel.
The base was painted using the same colours from mini to add harmony.
To contrast the overall cold feel and bring focus to head used warm tones on helmet.
Balanced this out with fresh warm blood on weapons to create triangle of spot colours.

Comments and any feed back would be great, Anyone kind enough to vote he's now on cmon
 Cheers for looking                                                                ijee.Dave.

'On with the Snow'.... How to... Snow.

Hi again folks
Like it says in the title 'On with the Snow'.
Few people asked about the snow effect on recent...ish paint job of
BaneLords.     Ulric the Defiler,

Things required; Bicarbonate of soda
                         Satin varnish
                         Tooth pick
                         Sculpting tool
                         Spreader
Pallet    (Cat head shape is optional)

Start off with blob of varnish on pallet.

Sprinkle on the Bicarbonate of soda.

Mix together. adding more of each to thicken or thin down.

Apply. Used sculpt tool like spade and tooth pick to push and place.
Added snow effect over several (6-8) layers to give fluffy texture.
Letting each layer dry before the next is applied..

                                                                 Hope this is of help.
                                                                                                              . ijee.Dave.

'I Become father'... Back after Baby Boy break!!

The day finally came and couldn't be happier.
My little boy was born healthy and perfect,
Thanks to brilliant mum!!xx
As you can imagine this new addition to the
Family has had massive impact on daily life
But wouldn't change a thing. Already got him a starter
Set of paints and few brushes!!!(maybe bit early??)

Tools have been downed for while, but that's not to
say I haven't been making progress. During this time
I've attempted to 'tidy' paint room, clearing out old
and unused...well junk basically,is amazing what rubbish accumulates over time.
Also taken some time to research few ideas for painting
and possible Uk Demon entries.

Recently I did manage to get my brushes wet and launched
into the Smog mini Jaybee the Ripper, commission.
And made good start on GW's Wolfrik,as warm up mini after
break from the brush to get the feel and flow going again.
Smog mini is totally underwraps till complete as requested, But there will be some W.I.P shots of Wolfrik asap.
Additional stuff coming soon Inc pictures this is more of a 'hi am back'
Cheers for visiting.

Ulric the Defiler. Banelord's. finished.

                                       Finally fully finished and photographed,
Many fun hours working on Ulric from Maelstrom, Pushed myself to create better overall feel/mood.
Went for fairly heavy 'Zenithal' light effect, more so than usual which will be doing again as like how the effect turned out.

Change is good..

Lots going on at the moment around here painting and life related.
With the birth of my first son or daughter imminent in the next few
weeks, There are so many things to do and sort out before the
arrival.Recently I've been plastering and decorating our house
including new nursery!!  Daddy Dave !!!
Found time to re-vamp my painting area adding new shelf unit
to try and streamline work process. Making things closer to hand
and on view so use them more often.

During this re-vamp I got to thinking about other ways to improve
productivity and quality..Having had niggling feeling recently about
how long I've been painting, the possibility and ease in which can
get stuck in my ways.Approaching miniatures with same techniques
and almost mechanical process. This has been bothering me for
while now and I've been taking small steps to evolve.
So with my tidy the new changes should make noticeable difference
Paints; Having purchased lots of paints over the years to try out,
I've amassed large amount that never get used but sit in
box hiding my 'Core Pallet'.. All these paints have been
moved to secondary box to re-discover and ease the use
of my preferred pallet.(Effect paints like Tamiya/varnish/
oils etc have been grouped separately)
Pallet; For me a 'Matt white tile' has been used since probably
day one, This has served me loyally    but    it does cause
certain limitations with the prolonged use of mixed and
          more complex colour combinations,
          Solution d.i.y 'Wet pallet'
Tried this once before with poor results, which is why I
have stayed away till now.. Little bit of research, better
materials and few experiments, wanting to improve harmony
          and feel.. all seems good.

Nothing terribly ground breaking, More of a...
'Don't get stuck in your ways'
Try things out! look at how you paint,What you like and where
things could be made easier and better,
Small changes can make big difference
But change is something that happens at slow pace,
Sneaking up on you when your not looking.
Growth takes time and now seems to be right moment to move forward..

Paint has been added to Ulric from the BaneLords range, lots of little
changes,extra blood and icicles,smoothing blends.
Got few additional bits to do. Feels close to finished.   :)

To try out my new wet pallet I jumped onto next miniature, Namely C'Tan Deceiver
from Games Workshop,
All of the basecoats have Game colour 'Scurvy Green' mixed in,To create harmony
throughout the model. Using cold greens and blue to shade. Warm yellow and red
to highlight. Still early days, Started hinting at the Eldar Deception next will be the
true side of the Necrons,

Comments thoughts and advice Welcome..

Banelord w.i.p

Things continue to progress with Ulric the Defiler,
Now it's drawing towards completion pace has slowed right down,
to muse possible extra additions and changes.

Having not done any sculpting recently, dusted off the old sculpt tools
to create a severed head for pole on base..

Next up I added some Evil Magical symbols to Standing stone.

At the moment I am working on adding some icicles,to enhance the Freezing
cold feel.

Should have everything put together soon and some final pictures...
Comments and questions welcome.
Cheers
